Casting on

1.  Make a slip knot and place it on the left needle (Fig 1)

2.  Insert the right hand needle through the slipknot and pass the yarn over the right needle (Fig 2)

3.  Pull a loop through (Fig 3)

4.  Place this loop on the left hand needle (Fig 4)

5.  Insert the right hand needle between the two stitches on the left needle. Wind the yarn round the point of the right needle (Fig 5)

6.  Draw a loop through, place this loop on the left hand needle (Fig 6)

Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the required number of stitches are cast on.

Basic knitting stitches - casting on

The Knit Stitch

1.  With the yarn at the back of the work, insert the right hand needle from left to right through the front of the first stitch on the left hand needle (Fig 1)

2.  Wind the yarn over the right hand needle (Fig 2)

3.  Pull through a loop (Fig 3)

4.  Slip the original stitch off the left hand needle.  Repeat until all the stitches have been transferred from the left to right hand needle.

 The Purl Stitch

1.  With the yarn at the front of the work, insert the right hand needle from right to left through the front of the first stitch on the left hand needle (Fig 1)

2.  Wind the yarn round the right hand needle (Fig 2)

3.  Draw a loop through to the back (Fig 3)

4.  Slip the original stitch off the left hand needle.  Repeat until all the stitches have been transferred from the left to the right hand needle.

Casting Off

Casting off knitwise - knit the first two stitches. *Using the left hand needle, lift the first stitch over the second and drop if off the needle.  Knit the next stitch and repeat from * (Fig 1)

Casting off purlwise - purl the first two stitches.  *Using the left hand needle, lift the first stitch over the second and drop it off the needle.  Purl the next stitch and repeat from * (Fig 2)
